抗战期间，重庆作为世界反法西斯远东指挥中心和中国的战时首都，遭到了日军大规模的无差别轰炸。这一期间，英国主流媒体《泰晤士报》通过其派往重庆特约记者以及援引其他西方驻重庆媒体的报道等多种形式，真实记录了日军集中轰炸中国平民和民用设施、蓄意轰炸西方国家外事机构和人员，以及重庆民众英勇反轰炸斗争的主要历史过程。这些报道不仅以历史记录者的身份见证了日军无差别轰炸重庆之暴行，具有较高的史料研究价值，而且以媒体传播者的角色宣传了以重庆为代表的中国军民抗战形象，建构出一种谴责日军残暴、同情和支持中国的舆论导向。
